MR. YUDHISHTHIR KHATAU
Mr. Yudhishthir Khatau, the Managing Director of Varun Shipping Company Limited is a Bachelor of Science and Economics from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. – Majored in Finance and Marketing. He joined Varun Shipping Co. Ltd. in 1994 and is responsible for the overall management of the company, focusing on the company’s growth and expansion projects.
Varun Shipping Co. Ltd. is one of the leading shipping companies in India, having over 32 years of experience in diversified sectors of shipping including petroleum products, LPG and off-shore. The Company specializes in transportation of petroleum and LPG, and today owns the largest LPG fleet in India, about 79% of the total LPG tonnage under the Indian flag. Varun is also the second largest owner of tonnage in the global mid-size fully-refrigerated LPG carrier fleet. Varun Shipping Co. Ltd. is a public listed company with about 74,000 shareholders with the promoters being the Dilip Khatau Group. The company has a track record of profitability and uninterrupted payment of dividend for the past 22 years. In April 2006 the Company received the "Fastest Expanding Indian Shipping Company" award conferred by the National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee, formed by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. The vision of Mr. Khatau has been “to meet the challenges of a new world” which has fuelled and encouraged the Company to navigate across the globe, shipping energy, delivering value.
Mr. Khatau is a Director of VSC International Pte. Ltd. Singapore, a 100% subsidiary of Varun Shipping Company Limited, India. He is the President of the Indian National Shipowners’ Association for the second consecutive year and is actively involved in all aspects of shipping. He has been a member of the Tonnage Tax Committee constituted by the Government of India to develop the Tonnage Tax Act that was introduced in India in 2004 which provided a level playing field to the Indian Shipowners in the global market. The introduction of Tonnage Tax gave a boost to the stagnating shipping industry in India which registered an unprecented growth in tonnage of over 24%. Today as President INSA, Mr. Khatau is spearheading the entire shipping industry to reach greater heights, with a vision to steer the Indian shipping industry to grow to become one of the best in the world.
Mr. Khatau is also a Director on the Board of Indian Register of Shipping, and is a Trustee on the New Mangalore Port Trust. Mr. Khatau’s other appointments are on the National Shipping Board, Bureau Veritas - South Asia India Committee and the American Bureau of Shipping – India National Committee.
Mr. Khatau is married with two children aged 10 and 7. Inspite of his hectic professional life, Mr. Khatau is very particular about his exercise and fitness routine. He practices Taikondo, is a keen scuba diver, a fishing enthusiast, loves wild life and photography and takes time off with his family to relax in nature.
